The property of a spy as Sir Roger Moore – The Personal Collection is toasted at Bonhams New Bond Street headquarters and represented a fine autumn night remembering the best James Bond with colleagues, creatives, friends and family. Roger Moore’s three children Geoffrey, Deborah and Christian were on hand to add insight to the sometimes very personal items up for sale. Bond producer Barbara Broccoli took in the sometimes familiar nods and trinkets (a signed copy of Dana Broccoli’s Florinda to Luisa Moore was a nice touch), lyricist Tim Rice, Bond fan and spy author Charles Cumming, Ian Fleming bibliographer Jon Gilbert, Bond historian Ajay Chowdhury, George Lazenby’s manager Anders Frejdh, actors, colleagues, press, society pals, charity associates and grandchildren and many more all remembered the third Bond over Martini recipes created by the man himself, Pol Roger (!) champagne and a burgeoning glee for many at being in such a grand cathedral dedicated to Moore.
Comprising of over two hundred separate lots The Personal Collection is a curious span of Sir Roger Moore’s career, work, colleagues, vacations, homesteads, tastes, art, charity work, family and friendships.
Douglas Hayward’s suits stand out from Moore’s seven film tenure as 007. With his swansong A View to a Kill being a clear feature of the suits on offer, this Bond ’85 fan can easily claim the white padded Bogner ski-suit as seen in Roger’s final pre-title overture. The Hayward Ascot herringbone three-piece suit, the double-breasted Mohair suit from the Eiffel Tower chase, and even a blazer worn outside of the San Francisco City Hall for a US press launch in 1985 feature here.
A great many Moore era Bond posters, advertising hoardings, vinyl soundtracks and standees feature for the less bulging pocket. Again, A View to a Kill features heavily – as does Moonraker (1979), The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) and Roger’s own favorite, The Spy Who Loved Me (1977).
The auction takes place on Wednesday 4th October 2023. And with over two hundred lots each conveying a bit more about Sir Roger, this represents a grand celebration of fifty years since his Live and Let Die debut and the life of a true British legend.
