M laid down his pipe and stared at it tetchily. “We have no choice. We’re just going to bring forward this other chap you’ve been preparing. But you didn’t tell me his name.”
“It’s Bond, sir,” the Chief of Staff replied.
“James Bond.”Forever and a Day by Anthony Horowitz
In what has been billed as a prequel to 1953’s Casino Royale, author Anthony Horowitz and Ian Fleming Publications have announced the title and background to the newest of 007 novels – Forever and a Day. Set before the key establishing events of Fleming’s debut James Bond story, Forever and a Day “is the story of the birth of a legend in the brutal underworld of the French Riviera” (Ian Fleming Publications).
“I couldn’t have been happier when the Ian Fleming estate invited me back to write a second Bond. I very much enjoyed writing Forever and a Day, exploring what might have been Bond’s first mission and imagining some of the forces that might have turned him into the iconic figure that the whole world knows. I hope Ian Fleming would have approved!”
– Anthony Horowitz
In his second Bond novel after 2015’s Trigger Mortis, Horowitz has returned to the 007 world for his sophomore spy novel and is taking events and our man James back to key events before 1953 and a thriller set on the French Riviera and a Cold War Europe gripped by organised crime. The newest addition to Bond’s literary canon is also able to boast not only the return of M and Moneypenny, but a bit of literary assistance from Fleming himself – as Horowitz has been granted access to some unused material to weave and inform his new work.
The sea keeps its secrets. But not this time.
One body. Three bullets. 007 floats in the waters of Marseille, killed by an unknown hand.
It’s time for a new agent to step up. Time for a new weapon in the war against organised crime.
It’s time for James Bond to earn his licence to kill.
This is the story of the birth of a legend, in the brutal underworld of the French Riviera
