From February 2024, London’s BFI Southbank is dedicating a cracking season to celebrate arguably the UK’s greatest ever film composer, John Prendergast Barry!
From 1 February to 12 March 2024 Saint Etienne’s Bob Stanley will curate JOHN BARRY – SOUNDTRACKING BOND AND BEYOND.
Predominantly honing in on the London years of Barry’s career – which includes spy films, swinging comedies and social realism – the season will showcase the distinctive, autumnal and darkly beautiful John Barry sound.
Highlights include timeless movie classics such as the sixtieth gilded 007 bullet GOLDFINGER (1964), YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE (1967), THE IPCRESS FILE (1965) and the beautiful MIDNIGHT COWBOY (1969).
Lesser seen and heard Barry titles will also include FOUR IN THE MORNING (1965), PETULIA (1968), BOOM! (1968) and DEADFALL (1968). And in March, the second chapter of this lush season will also feature ON HER MAJESTY’S SECRET SERVICE and WALKABOUT (1971).
On February 6th 2024, the BFI and Barry biographer Eddi Fiegel (John Barry – A Sixties Theme) hosted a panel discussion called JOHN BARRY – SOUNDTRACKING BOND AND BEYOND.
Joining the panel were season curator Bob Stanley, composer Nainita Desai and writer and musician Neil Brand. John Barry’s daughter was also in the audience – as seven clips marking the composer’s approach, style and musicianship celebrated the man who scored the Cold War.
Tickets for JOHN BARRY – SOUNDTRACKING BOND AND BEYOND are now available.
